The RESPImmun
PhD-Program Congress
(Retreat)

The second annual RESPImmun PhD-Program Congress (Retreat) took place on 10 October 2023 at the Medical University of Graz. RESPImmun students, faculty members and guests came together to hear about the most recent developments in the program and in the field of chronic respiratory diseases.

During the student sessions, all RESPImmun PhD students had the chance to present and discuss their projects and data. The talks were held in 4 thematic sessions and each panel was introduced by our internationally renowned guest speakers: Prof. Norbert Völkel (Virginia Commonwealth University) gave a comprehensive introduction into the field of COPD, Prof. Bethany Moore (University of Michigan Medical School) talked about recent findings in the field of lung fibrosis, while Prof. Wilfried Ellmeier (Medical University of Vienna) talked about research in the field of immunology. Hana Cernecka (EVOTEC), who gave an insight into her career and research from a pharmaceutical company's perspective, completed the guest talks.

In addition, during a round table session the importance of open innovation in science was discussed. Valentina Biasin, Simone Tischler and Claas Röhl emphasized the relevance and benefits of involving patients in basic research projects. It was concluded that on the one hand, science becomes more approachable. On the other hand also scientific questions become more focused on the actual need of patients when patients and the general public are included in basic research projects.

We also want to congratulate Bernhard Reiter (1st place) and Alankrita Rani and Rishi Rajesh (ex-aequo 2nd place) who were voted for the best presentation award by the guest speakers.

We especially want to thank our sponsors AstraZeneca, Land Steiermark and Stadt Graz for their contribution to the event!
